Fitness Trends
Did you have fitness or weight loss goals for 2011? What about 2012, have you thought about tackling weight management, strength or other aspects of your fitness next year? It is that time of the year again, time to start to plan next year's personal goals, including fitness and health.
FITNESS TRENDS
The North American College of Sports Medicine recently supplied their survey results for the "Anticipated Fitness Trends of 2012", with participation from more than 2,600 fitness execs. Fitness and weight loss options continue to stay on our minds, and several of the trends from 2011 will be going robust into next year. Nonetheless many health trends were properly added to the list of "fads" (think stuff like Thigh Pros, or the Ab Rocker). So if you're not sure what direction you need your fitness plan to follow next year, here are the fitness trends identified in the survey.
Self improvement
We continue to focus on self-development with no sign of that slowing, and there continue to be several of new trends in exercise intended to help us reach our fitness and health goals. Those fitness predictions indicate the trail to improved health has plenty of new opportunities, as well as some old ones that appear as if they will try for a comeback.
TRENDING UP
For starters, there are a couple fitness trends which are (happily) trending up
- Back-to-basics
- Functional fitness
The term "basics" here refers to the idea of using our body to get into shape, without the help of much else. Remember fifth grade PE classes, e.g. Push ups, sit ups, lunges, sprints and jumping jacks? If the forecasters trends are correct, these kinds of activities will become part of the workout of tomorrow. Another new trend that is showing signs of catching on is a thing by the name of functional fitness รข" programs designed to help us maneuver through our day-to-day activities more easily.
TRENDING DOWN
A couple of trends that seem to have finally started to vanish are:
- High-impact aerobic-style workouts
- Those pricey, home gym hardware items
High-Impact aerobics were effective, the problem was the body takes a pounding with each step, jump and hop movement. On the other hand, those fancy home gym clobber items are good, but without acceptable goals and behavior modification to go with them, they unavoidably become just a neat place to hang our washing. Ever know somebody that had a treadmill sitting in the corner with hangars hung on the rails (perhaps even you)?
CONCLUSION
WHAT'S NEW: Technology is serving to aid fitness services by providing us with further motivational support. Mobile-based apps, social media and other technology services may continue to affect the fitness sector in new and ingenious ways.
WHAT'S POPULAR: BOOT CAMP style workouts continue being preferred, by keeping participants incentivized and feeling included with a group. They work!
WHAT'S BAD: While we are actually wiser than we were 20 years ago, many people still assume the best weight loss options are found by following a low cal diet or fad nutritional novelty, rather than integrating regular activity in the shape of a fitness routine into their daily way of life.
MY THOUGHTS: The old saying still applies: If you want what you have been getting, keep doing what you've been doing. Put an alternative way, you've got to make changes in your way of life to see different results, no way around it. Don't forget that fitness trainers, personal trainers, diet consultants and wellness coaches have great experience to share at low cost. We do not have to gather all the information ourselves, better to leverage someone who's done that for us. It takes more than an extremely low calorie diet to enhance our health and weight. As an alternative raise your physical activity, make smarter choices about the food you consume, get correct rest and avoid stress when practicable. If exercise is an element of your daily habit, the advantages come easier If you don't get deliberate and set exercise as a goal and habit, it likely will not happen, and 2012 will look like 2011.
