Perfect Abs: Tips on How to Tone Your Stomach

by Leif Oakman

Every day, a number of life's choices are governed by the amount of fat that surrounds our belly. From the clothes we wear to how we walk to even the food we eat, we base our decisions on what our body allows us to do. We join expensive gyms and complex dietary regimes, all in a bid to lose that bit of flab that surrounds our stomach.

The amount of time we spend focusing on exercising our abdominal muscles, directly, leaves us extremely tired and satisfied, but other than blowing money on equipment and memberships, they do us little good. As our muscles get stronger, we keep piling on the reps, but those six-packs will never show under all that un-burnt fat!

So, is there a way to make sure that you get chiseled male and female abs? There are, in fact, two easy ways to ensure that your abdominal muscles are the envy of the neighbourhood!

If you want to end up with rock-hard abs, you need to understand exactly how your body works. Following exercise routines that focus on your abs simply ensures that your muscles get stronger. If you do not burn the fat that is piled up in front of them, then you could have the best abs of all time but no one would be able to see them. The only way to get them out into the open is to focus on a nutrient-rich diet and a full-body exercise routine that works your core too!

The best part about these exercises and dietary requirements are that anyone can do it. It does not matter if you are male, female, in your 20s or in your 50s, if you have the discipline to maintain the routine, you will end up with a sharp set of abs to flaunt. The most effective way of losing body fat is by maximizing your body's lean muscle - usually done through regular hard & intensive exercise.

There isn't anything mysterious or unknown about these routines. However, our misconceptions and lack of knowledge tend to keep us away from the actual benefits that these routines can provide. Weight training, if used effectively, is the best way to reduce belly fat. Despite this, few instructors have the knowledge to connect weight training to belly flab and, thereafter, pass this knowledge onto their clients. Spending endless hours on cardio, notching up thousands of sit-up and crunch reps are commonly considered as the most effective way of attacking belly flab. However, that is far from the truth!

As the human body gets accustomed to working out a particular muscle group, that muscle group gains strength and is capable of taking more punishment. We pile on the reps in the hopes of making a difference, but all we are doing is making the muscle stronger and relying on cardio to take care of the flab. The concept of introducing variable intensity training and attacking the body's metabolism is almost unknown in most health circuits. If you stick to our exercise & dietary regimen, a mere five minutes, twice a week, of abdominal exercises is all you need to guarantee that your stomach ends up in perfect shape.

Once people start building up their abdominal strength, they start increasing the reps instead of increasing resistance. This not only makes the exercise routine boring, it is also a slow process with little added benefits. Combining a hanging leg raise with a complete pelvic curl-up not only adds greater resistance, but also makes your abs stronger, quicker. Instead of wasting hours on those thousands of reps, a few solid reps can do the job just as well, only faster. Include rotational movements into the routines, exercises and lower abs workout programs and you can ensure that you take care of the deeper muscles as well.

Some people try to push their body to its physical limits but fail to understand the true essence of what needs to be done to guarantee tighter abs. Increasing the metabolic rate as well as calorie-burning are the primary goals of exercise and if your routine isn't doing both, you need a strategy re-think. Vary your exercise's intensity regularly and you will find a whole different set of results from those hours in training.

However, simply focusing on full-body routines will be a waste of time if you do not support it with the right kind of food. Diets are of all kinds and a simple search over the Internet will throw up plenty of exciting and interesting looking options. However, you don't need any of the fancy nomenclature because a simple nutrient-rich diet based on natural foods is the best way to guarantee a healthy and energetic body.

In our fast lives, we tend to live on the fly and our food also tends to head down that path. From fast food to processed food, everything we buy usually ends up coming out of a packet. Such food not only ruins our body's metabolism, it does little to provide us with the nutrients necessary to work our way through a demanding exercise schedule.

Eating right means getting enough naturally nutrient food groups into our diet! Fiber and nutrients from fruits & veggies, high quality protein and even the right kind of fat is essential for our body to enable healthy metabolism rates. As long as we are dedicated to our exercise schedule and keep our body running on fresh & healthy foods, we aren't too far away from perfect six-pack abs.
